A guru is “a teacher, a guide, an expert or a master.” When it comes to comedy writing there is one person who has been all of those things to a lot of people – Gene Perret.
Gene went from writing for Slappy White to winning three Emmys on The Carol Burnett Show. He wrote material for Phyllis Diller and became Bob Hope’s head writer. He produced Three’s Company and Welcome Back Kotter. And this is just the tip of the iceberg of his credits. But that doesn’t make you a guru. And Gene didn’t go in search of that label, it was just during the height of his career, Gene made a conscious decision to help others. As he said, “I was having so much fun, I wanted everyone else to have fun, too.”
